For those that don't know, hayfever is a common allergic condition that affects ⅕ people in the UK. Symptoms can include but are not limited to, itchy, red or water filled eyes, a runny nose, and sneezing.

Most people experience hay fever if they have an allergic reaction to pollen in spring and summer time. Pollen is a very thin powder found in plants and released when they bloom. Particles of the thin powder can come into contact with your eyes, nose and mouth, which will, in turn, trigger your body to form an immune response in order to protect you. This, in turn, will then cause the swelling and itchiness of the body.
The most sensitive part of your body to pollen is your eyes. The reason they become watery is to “wash out” any pollen particles that may have found its way into your eyes.

As spring has just begun, and flowers are starting to bloom, below we have listed some tips in order to help you deal with the coming tide of pollen, and the hay fever epidemic that comes with it.

Going outdoors

A pollen count is known to be at its highest in the early morning (6am-9am) and the evening 6pm-9pm). If possible avoid going outdoors at this time, and if possessive keep your doors and windows shut at all times of the day.

Shake it off

Pollen is known to stick to your clothing, so before you come indoors, make sure to shake down your clothes outside in order to remove any pollen that is attached. Additionally, as pollen is known to stick to your hair, make sure to shake your hair or, alternatively if you have time, give your hair a rinse or wash. Attempt to wash your hair regularly to avoid being affected by hay fever indoors.

Nasal Spray

One of the most effective ways to combat a runny or itchy nose, it to use a steroid nasal spray. This works by preventing your nostrils from becoming inflamed, however for the spray to reach full effectiveness, it must be used regularly, every day, during the hayfever season. Eye Drops

The best and most effective prevention method of hayfever is to use a daily, non-drowsy antihistamine tablet. These work by preventing the histamines in your body to form an immune response, which in turn prevents the swelling and itchiness of your body. Rubbing petroleum jelly around our nostrils can help to prevent pollen from going up the nasal passage as it traps it. If you don't like the smell or feel of the jelly then alternatives are available such as beeswax.
