Obesity Epidemic

Obesity is a rising epidemic that is affecting a quarter of adults in England alone. This is an increase of 10% compared to 20 years ago. With obesity estimated to affect around 1 in every 4 adults and 1 in every 5 children aged 10-11 across the UK, it is no secret that this is a serious condition that is common amongst us Brits.

The cause of obesity is generally down to the consumption of more calories, particularly those in fatty and sugary foods than you burn off through physical activity. This means that excess energy is then stored by the body as fat. Obesity is an increasing issue for many people; because modern living now involves eating excessive quantities of cheap, high-calorie food and also spending an extensive amount of time sat down.

Obesity is classed as having a BMI over 30 and has been linked to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes, cancer, stroke, coronary heart disease, high blood pressure, osteoarthritis, sleep apnea, gallstones and reproductive problems in women. The NHS England chief executive Simon Stevens has described the current trend as ‘a slow-motion car crash in terms of avoidable illness and rising health costs.’

This condition can also cause a lot of other problems for people, some examples of day-to-day issues related to obesity are:

  • Breathlessness

  • Sweating more

  • Snoring

  • Difficulty engaging in physical activity

  • Feeling very tired

  • Joint and back pain

  • Low confidence and self-esteem

  • Feeling isolated from others

Psychological problems are also linked heavily with those who are obese, as the condition can often affect relationships with family and friends, leading to depression in many cases.

In America, the average male waistline is 40 inches and the average female waistline is 36.5 inches. This average waistline measurement has increased by 1 inch each decade.

The only solution to this problem is a change in diet and exercise. Unfortunately, there are no miracle cures or ‘quick fixes’ for obesity. However, you will find treatments available that could potentially help you lose the excess weight when used alongside a significant change in your diet.

Weight Loss Treatment

Regular monitoring of your weight is crucial for you to keep track of your progress. It is all about setting realistic goals and involving your friends and family in the process so that they can help with your attempt to lose weight. Remember not to be too hard on yourself either; what may seem like a small amount of weight that has been lost can help significantly in the long run. It is all about losing weight safely and consistently, so don’t feel down if you have only lost what appears to be a small amount initially.

Pharmacy Direct provides an online Weight Loss Service which includes a range of prescription and non-prescription medicines including Xenical and XLS-Medical. Xenical is a fat binder which can help you lose up to 50% extra weight compared to diet and exercise alone. Xenical works by attaching itself to the enzymes in your digestive system that breaks down fats. By doing so, it prevents around a third of the fat in the food you eat is absorbed by your body, allowing it to be eliminated.
