Dandruff is a common skin condition that is not harmful and cannot be caught from others. It causes white or grey flakes of dry skin to appear on the scalp and in the hair. Dandruff is often more noticeable in darker hair, and flakes may fall onto your shoulders or back. Your scalp may also feel dry and itchy.
Dandruff is not caused by poor hygiene, though infrequent washing is likely to make it more noticeable.
Stress and cold weather may make dandruff worse.
Dandruff may also be caused by certain conditions such as:
You may not be sure of what is causing your dandruff. This is nothing to worry about, though! Your dandruff will more than likely be helped by our treatments. If this is not the case or if it gets worse, speak to your doctor.
There are many different anti-dandruff treatments on the market that are easily accessible and available to buy without prescription.
We stock Nizoral anti-dandruff shampoo, which contains the active ingredient ketoconazole.
This ingredient is an antifungal medication used to treat skin infections and prevent them from returning.
It is not recommended to use anti-dandruff shampoo daily as this may cause your scalp to become very dry.
Once or twice a week is a good amount to use the shampoo, which has been shown to be effective from the first use.
Initially, it is recommended to use the shampoo around twice a week for up to 4 weeks until your dandruff has cleared up, and you can start using it every 1 to 2 weeks to help prevent dandruff from returning.
Common side effects are irritated or red skin. This may be helped by using the shampoo less often (as mentioned above), and taking care of your scalp throughout use of the shampoo using moisturising oil, hair tonic or scalp masks. Using other shampoos or conditioners while using anti-dandruff shampoo can wash it away, making it less effective.
Usually you won’t need to speak with your doctor about dandruff, as it can usually be treated easily and simply.
However, you may want to see your GP if:
