What is Tadalafil?
Tadalafil is a generic, unbranded version of Cialis, a very popular erectile dysfunction treatment. Tadalafil is the active ingredient in Cialis, meaning that they are medically equivalent; however, Tadalafil is accessible at a much lower cost.
How does Tadalafil work?
When a man is sexually stimulated, nitric oxide is released in the body to enable the production of cyclic guanosine monophosphate (cGMP), which controls the dilation and contraction of the blood vessels that carry blood to and from the penis.
When the blood vessels that allow blood to flow into the penis enlarge and those that remove blood contract, the penis fills with blood and an erection occurs and is maintained.
An enzyme called phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE5) destroys cGMP, which causes the blood vessels to return to their normal size and ends the erection. Tadalafil prevents PDE5 from destroying cGMP, which causes the erection to last for longer.
Tadalafil is active in the body for up to 36 hours, leading it to become known as “the weekend pill”.
In addition to treatment for erectile dysfunction, Tadalafil may be used to treat benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) and pulmonary arterial hypertension.
How to take Tadalafil
Tadalafil comes as tablets that you swallow whole with water. It can be taken with or without food.
When used to treat erectile dysfunction, it should be taken at least 30 minutes before sex is expected in order to have enough time to take effect.
When taken to treat other conditions, it should be taken as prescribed by your doctor.
Tadalafil tablets come in 2.5mg, 5mg, 10mg and 20mg strengths. The usual dose is 5mg for benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH), 10mg for erectile dysfunction, and 40mg for pulmonary arterial hypertension.
Whatever you are taking Tadafil for, you take it only once per day.
Tadalafil side effects
As with all medicines, some people will experience side effects when taking Tadalafil. Many people experience none at all, whereas others experience only mild ones.
Common side effects affect more than 1 in 100 people and include:
feeling sick (nausea)
red or flushed face
These may increase if the dose is increased. If you are affected, keep taking the medicine, but tell a doctor or pharmacist if they bother you or do not go away.
Serious side effects are rare and affect fewer than 1 in 1,000 people; they include:
chest pains – if this happens during or after sex, move into a semi-sitting position and try to relax (do not use nitrates for chest pain while taking Tadalafil)
prolonged and sometimes painful erections – if you have an erection that lasts for more than 4 hours, contact your doctor
a sudden problem with your eyesight or hearing
red raised patches or red spots on your skin
a swollen face and/or swelling around the eyes
seizures or fits
If any of these affect you, stop taking Tadalafil and contact your doctor straight away.
Very rarely, someone may experience a serious allergic reaction. Stop taking Tadalafil and immediately seek medical advice if you experience any of the following:
skin rash, perhaps including peeling, blistering, itchy or swollen skin
shortness of breath
trouble talking or breathing
runny nose or sneezing
your mouth, face, lips, tongue or throat start swelling
These are not the only potential side effects of Tadalafil. For a full list, see the leaflet inside your medicine packet.

What is generic Cialis Tadalafil?
Cialis is the brand name for a medicine in which the active ingredient is tadalafil. Prior to November 2017, the licence for manufacture and sale of Cialis was held by the pharmaceutical company, Lilly. Following expiry of the licence, other companies were free to manufacture and sell the drug, although not as Cialis. So, while tadalafil is the medical name and Cialis is a brand name, they are the same medicine.
