Avodart (Dutasteride UK)

What is Avodart?

Avodart belongs to a class of medication known as 5-reductase inhibitors (5-ARIs). The active ingredient in Avodart is dutasteride. It is used primarily to improve the flow of urine in the treatment of benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH).

How Does Avodart Work?

Benign prostate hyperplasia (BPH) is growth of the prostate gland caused by the body producing too much of a hormone called dihydrotestosterone. Growth can put pressure on the bladder and the urethra, which can cause both a need to pass water frequently and difficulty in doing so. It can also make it difficult to fully empty your bladder. Dutasteride, the active ingredient in Avodart, lowers the production of dihydrotestosterone, which helps to shrink the prostate and relieve the symptoms. If you are from the UK or you are international, you can buy dutasteride online in the form of Avodart through our private GP. Start your consultation now. You can learn more about the difference between Avodart and Finasteride in the video below. We've also written Dutasteride vs Finasteride - The Ultimate Guide, that you should read too.

- Do not skip doses or stop taking Avodart without first talking to your doctor. - Avodart UK should not be used by women who are breastfeeding or pregnant. - Do not use Avodart without informing your doctor of any underlying medical conditions you may have. - Do not use Avodart if you are allergic to any of its ingredients. - You must use a condom when engaging in sexual intercourse to avoid exposing your partner to your semen.

How do I take Avodart?

Capsules should be swallowed whole with water; they may be taken with or without food. Do not chew or break open the capsules, as the contents may cause you to have a sore throat or mouth. Do not take Avodart after the expiry date shown on the pack, and do not give any capsules to other people, even if they appear to have the same condition as you. Always take Avodart as prescribed by your doctor.

Avodart dosage

The recommended dose is one capsule (0.5 mg), taken once a day. Do not exceed the recommended dose and always tell your doctor about any other medications you might be taking or medical problems you might be experiencing. Please note that Avodart is a long-term medication and so it may take some months before it starts to have an impact on your condition; don’t be tempted to take more than prescribed to try to kick-start any beneficial effects, and do keep on taking it for as long as instructed by your doctor. Once again, we're here to talk if you have any concerns.

The active ingredient in Avodart is dutasteride. The inactive ingredients are lecithin, titanium dioxide, gelatin, Mono and diglycerides of caprylic/capric acid, iron oxide yellow glycerol, (E171), triglycerides, and butylated hydroxytoluene.

Avodart side effects

As it is the case with any medicine, Avodart can cause some side effects. The most common ones may affect up to 1 in 10 men and include:

  • impotence (inability to achieve an erection)

  • decreased libido (reduction in sex drive)

  • difficulty with ejaculation

  • breast enlargement or tenderness (gynecomastia)

  • dizziness (when taken with tamsulosin)

Uncommon side effects (may affect up to 1 in 100 men) include:

  • heart failure (you may experience shortness of breath, extreme tiredness and swelling in your ankles and legs)

  • hair loss (usually from the body) or hair growth

Possible (frequency unknown) side effects include:

  • depression

  • pain and swelling in the testicles

If you suffer any side effects, or if anything unusual occurs that you think might be as a result of taking Avodart, talk to your doctor or pharmacist.

Very rarely, someone may experience a serious allergic reaction. Stop taking Avodart and immediately seek medical advice if you experience any of the following:

  • skin rash, possibly itchy

  • hives – swollen, pale red bumps on the skin that usually cause itching, but may also burn or sting

  • swelling of the eyelids, face, lips, arms or legs

These are not the only potential side effects of Avodart. For a full list, see the leaflet inside your medicine packet.

There are some medicines that can react with Avodart and possibly increase the likelihood that you will experience side-effects. These medicines include:

  • itraconazole or ketaconazole (used to treat fungal infections)

  • nefazodone (antidepressant)

  • alpha-blockers (for enlarged prostate or high blood pressure)

  • verapamil or diltiazem (for high blood pressure)

  • ritonavir or indinavir (for HIV)

Tell your doctor if you are taking any of these medicines, or any other medicines, whether prescription, over-the-counter or herbal preparations. You may need to take a reduced dose of Avodart, to avoid problems.

Please note that Avodart (Dutasteride UK) should be stored out of the sight and reach of children. If a child should handle a broken capsule, wash the affected area(s) immediately with soap and water and seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist. If you are in doubt, please contact us here.

Can I take Avodart in pregnancy?

Avodart is intended to be taken only by men. If you are, or may be, pregnant, avoid handling broken capsules as Dutasteride – the active ingredient in Avodart – is absorbed through the skin. It can affect the normal development of a male baby, especially if the foetus is exposed to it during the first 16 weeks of the pregnancy. If you are, or may be, pregnant and you come into contact with Avodart, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice. Make sure your partner uses a condom during sexual intercourse, as Dutasteride has been detected in the sperm of men taking the capsules.

Do I need a prescription for Avodart or Dutasteride UK?

You must have a valid prescription before you are able to buy Avodart tablets. If you do not have a private prescription, choose “supply me with a valid prescription” to add with an online consultation. You can purchase multiple (6) packs of this product on a single prescription.

What if I miss a dose?

If you miss a dose, then you should skip that dose entirely – don’t take double to make up for it.

What happens if I take too much?

If you take more Avodart than you should, contact your doctor or pharmacist for advice.

Can I drink alcohol while taking Avodart?

Avodart is not affected by alcohol, so yes, but take care to drink in moderation.
