Viagra contains the active ingredient Sildenafil, which increases the blood flow to the penis, helping men get erections. While Viagra helps men with getting and maintaining their erection, you need to be aroused for the drug to work effectively, as it does not have an impact on libido. The effectiveness of any erectile dysfunction drug can vary, therefore, if taking Viagra doesn't work the first time it might work more effectively the next. Doctors advise trying all forms of erectile dysfunction drugs 8 times before giving up.

All Erectile Dysfunction medications should be taken responsibly and you should never exceed the recommended dose. Sildenafil should not be taken more than once a day and it can only be taken by men aged 18 and over suffering from erectile dysfunction and impotence following an assessment.

Sildenafil Warning

Avoid using the pill if you suffer from any of the following conditions:
  • Heart disease or blood pressure.
  • Liver or kidney disease.
  • Retinitis pigmentosa.
  • You have had a heart attack or stroke within the last six months.
  • You are a hemophiliac.
  • Sickle cell anemia or leukemia.
  • You have a physical deformity of the penis.
  • Are taking a nitrate drug.

It usually takes 30-60 minutes for Viagra to work, so it should ideally be taken an hour before sex. The drug can be taken up to 4 hours before you plan on having sex and should not be taken more than once a day. For optimum performance, the drug should be taken on an empty stomach and should not be taken with more than one or two units of alcohol.

Sildenafil Ingredients

Sildenafil is the active element in each Sildenafil tablet, which comes in strengths of 25mg, 50mg, or 100mg. The inactive ingredients include: Microcrystalline cellulose, calcium hydrogen phosphate anhydrous, croscarmellose sodium, magnesium stearate, poly (vinyl alcohol), titanium dioxide (E171), macrogol 3350, and talc.
