Orlistat is a medicine used to treat obesity and can only be taken with a prescription. Orlistat is taken by mouth, 3 times a day along with fat-rich meals and helps you lose up to 50% more weight than you would without it. Orlistat works by preventing the body from absorbing about one-third of the fat in the food introduced by blocking the lipases (enzymes in the digestive system). It helps to break down some of the fat, making it undigestible and letting the body eliminate it through faeces. Orlistat is used to treat obesity, however, it should not replace a low-calorie intake diet. Orlistat reduces the absorption of certain vitamins and nutrients such as Betacarotene and Vitamin E. For this reason, you are highly recommended to follow a diet rich in fruit and vegetables and your doctor might advise you to take multivitamin supplements. Your daily intake of fat should be evenly distributed over the three meals and you should avoid eating high-fat snacks in between meals. As Orlistat should only be taken along with fatty foods, it would not have an effect if dietary fat is not present in your meal or if you skip it. Orlistat lets the body eliminate undigested fats through the faeces, therefore you might experience different bowel habits such as fatty or oily stools.
